Birkenhead is a borough and seaport in the Metropolitan area of Merseyside. It is situated on the Wirral Peninsula, facing Liverpool at the mouth of the River Mersey. The M53 motorway runs down the spine of Wirral and two tunnels under the Mersey offer motorists easy access within the region and to the surrounding area.

Place Name

The name Birkenhead may have come from 'Birchen Head' from the birch trees on the headland or alternatively from the river Birch (or Birkett) Head.
